Fire City began as a web series idea fellow writer and bestie, Brian Lubocki, and I came up with after we ran out of patience waiting for our Hollywood writing careers to take off. The core idea is that demons live among us, we can't see them for what they are, but they see each other. They have different types, histories, rivalries, strengths, weaknesses and supernatural powers. The only human in this world who can also see them is John Asher, a detective in the hard-boiled vein and our main character of the original proof of concept. The main character of our movie however is a demon named Vine. The idea quickly evolved into a feature film idea and, after we shot a proof of concept directed by terrific director, AJ Carter, with creature design provided by Academy Award-winning special effects company, Amalgamated Dynamics, the concept was called "Harry Potter for adults" by one of the studios who had seen the proof and read the feature script and was ready to package the project, Sony, Lionsgate or Anchor Bay, we're not sure which. Alas, we decided to keep it independent and produce it ourselves rather than option the script and lose creative control as well as the IP. We rewrote the script to make it more budget friendly, but in the end decided to write a PREQUEL to the original movie that would be much more doable. ​ The prequel is what we ended up producing and focuses on Atum Vine, a demon who must figure out why the miserable humans in his rundown building all of a sudden are happy and content. Demons feed off of human misery. Without it, they starve. ​ The feature was originally titled, Fire City: The Interpreter of Signs, but was renamed Fire City: End of Days to give it broader appeal. It was released in 2014 and can currently be seen on an AVOD platform near you. ​ Besides the feature that was shot and the proof that preceded it, there was a lot of ancillary material created, including short films, short stories, tarot cards, a comic book and other ephemera. It is really quite a vast world that we only barely realized. Perhaps we or someone will revive it before the singularity occurs.
